This summer, Quirk Gallery will host an exhibition of work from New York artist and illustrator, Danielle Kroll. Kroll's solo show, Charms From The Past, will be on view in The Mezzanine at Quirk Hotel June 28 through August 26. This exhibit will feature original works in gouache largely inspired by Kroll's nostalgia for her childhood, specifically the fond memories of time spent with her Polish grandparents. "My artwork intuitively carries impressions of my grandparents as they were my first sources of inspiration," Kroll explains. 

"When I think of them, I think of their warm homes and all the fascinating things I'd get to dig through. I like remembering the teacups my grandma would use in the morning, the floral pattern that adorned her couch, the rose garden that burst to life in the summer, and the beautiful makeup collection my grandma kept, though I never saw her use any of it."

Kroll grew up in New Jersey and attended Tyler School of Art, graduating in 2009 with a BFA in design. After college, she started working in Anthropologie's Art Department. She remained there for several years before deciding to follow her New York dream and pursue a career as a full-time independent illustrator. Kroll's current body of work includes publishing projects, stationery, textile designs, ceramics, product development and personal paintings. Clients include Anthropologie, Kate Spade, One Kings Lane, Penguin Books, Random House, Chronicle Books, Hallmark and Red Cap Cards.

For the work in her upcoming solo show at Quirk, Kroll's artist statement explains that she "[tried] to solidify wisps of memories and aim[ed] to encapsulate the charms my grandparents left me." In addition to the relics and personal memories that influenced the pieces in this show, Kroll says she's also inspired by mid-century art and design, flowers, the outdoors, road trips and thrift shops. Her work's playful style aims to make your average day a little bit brighter.
