In 2014, Susan Iverson began weaving the short, declarative word “NO” into small, intimately-scaled tapestries. Employing the powerful nuances of color, she sought to communicate the inherently complicated and varied meanings of the word in straightforward and simple compositions, and a chorus of voices emerged. Five years later, Iverson’s ever-evolving series, made of hand-dyed wools, silks and linens, resonates a wide spectrum of the word “NO”, summoning a multitude of interpretations informed by personal experiences and our volatile political climate.

This body of work is the result of my endless fascination with the meaning of color, within our culture, around the world and throughout history. When color is added to text, or the area around the text, the meaning of the word can be altered or enriched. While ‘NO’ can be read as a simple negative - I imagine each of these ‘NO’s read aloud with the color dictating all of the variables that identify context.
